garlic, onions, and potatoes, are they ready

Postby fbgapres on Wed Jul 22, 2009 9:34 am

Confused about when to harvest? Garlic is ready when bottom half of stalk is brown and green leaves look dull Remember to cut back on watering from now till the garlic is ready. Onions should be left in the ground till the whole plant is dead. Remeber to keep giving them water. Potatoes are ready when the whole plant dies. Allow them to stay in the ground another week or two to develop a thick skin (it helps them last longer)

Thanks for the tip about thickening up the skin on the potato. Did not know this.

I was able to harvest "new potatoes" this year. Just dug my hand in the ground before the whole plant died back but after flowering, and pulled out beautiful, small, red potatoes.
